Effects of Neonatal Massage on Newborn¡¯s Weight & Height, and Mothering Role Confidence and Satisfaction

Abstract
Objective: This study was to verify the effects of neonatal massage on weight, height and mothering role confidence and satisfaction.

Methods: This study was conducted using a quasi experimental non equivalent control group pretest-posttest. Fifty-one newborn infant from a postpartum care center were selected and assigned to two group, experimental and control. Data were collected from May 1 to July 20, 2013. Infant in the experimental group (24) were given massage for 15minutes daily for 14 days. Data were analyzed using SPSS win 21.0 program by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, ¥ö2-test and t-test.

Results: Significant difference were found in the ratios of weight gain (t=-8.179, p<.001) and grow in height (t=-2.850, p=.006) between the experimental group and the control group. Those in the control group and the difference was significant. Confidence (t=-2.246, p=.029) and satisfaction (t=-6.960, p<.001) in the mothering role was significantly
heigher between the experimental group and the control group.

Conclusion: These results suggest that the massage enhances growth of infant as well as enhancing the mother¡¯s confidence and satisfaction in her role as mother. Therefore, the massage for newborn can be use as an effective intervention.
